What’s On

2pm Tuesday, 19 May

A walk with Barrie Tyrer around the locations of excavations undertaken by Ribble Valley Archaeology, illustrated with images of the actual trenches at the locations where they were dug, followed by an opportunity to see some finds. You will visit the locations investigated, including the Ribchester to Ilkley Roman Road, the lost Medieval Chapel of Gazegill, and the newest area of investigation where Roman metal work and medieval coins have been found. The walk will be around three miles, with about 5 stops; there are no stiles, and the terrain is moderate, though in places might be muddy. No dogs please.

Meeting point is the car park at Eight at Gazegill, Gazegill Organics (///embellish.inspects.streaks) (SD 82057 46333) the car park is past the farm shop. The farm is at the end of Dancer Lane BB7 4EE. (We will then return to the cars and drive to the Village Hall (///decorator.mess.ruin) (SD 81220 45888) on Stoops Lane, Rimington BB7 4DU.

2pm Tuesday 9 June

A visit to Holden Clough Nurseries, meeting at the front of the Glass
House, which is the main entrance to the building and next to the botanical
plant room. Our tour will start in the Potting Shed, where you’ll see
a live demonstration of working a potting machine. We will continue outside
to learn of the history of the family-run, award-winning nursery, which
includes plant hunters exploring the world and bringing back plant specimens
dating back to 1927.

Tea/coffee and cream scones will be served in the café.

Total cost £10pp.

A visit to Ribble Valley Blacksmiths: Bill Carter and Oscar Duck, whose recent work includes replacing handcrafted components on the former gas lights in historic Manchester Town Hall.

A fish and chip lunch is booked at The Aspinall Arms, Mitton Road, Mitton, Clitheroe BB7 9PQ.

Total cost £20pp (drinks at lunch to be paid for separately).

Monday 3 August, 11am
The Blue Plaque Launch, at Barrowford Library, will unveil who lived along Gisburn Road, Barrowford in 1911. We are grateful to the staff at the library for accommodating us, and to Terry McGinn, the Chair of the Friends of Barrowford Library, for all his support, encouragement, and help with preparing a file of holders of Blue Plaques, to be housed in the library.

Our thanks also go to Lewis Ashworth for all the time spent gathering original material for a display to be placed in the library on the day. A free event, where tea, coffee, and ‘heritage’ cakes will be served.
